You could be next!

How many times a day do you hear at the supermarket, on TV or online about car and  home insurance and all these slogans and funny stories about comparison websites like www.comparethemarket.com (quite funny ads by the way)?

In the case of car or home insurance, you can be protected against theft and if you get your laptop stolen, for example, you might get the money back. But what about what you’ve got on your laptop? Can you recover it? All those memories, photos, work documents? All that time spent? No you can’t – no insurance covers your digital content…not your photos or your digital music.

But it is not only at home that “accidents” happen. Nowadays people are travelling more and more for both work and leisure, and we carry with us our laptops containing our professional and private data.

Laptops have very competitive prices, with lovely designs and tiny sizes that can be put away easily without occupying too much space.  Unfortunately, this new “mobile” lifestyle makes laptops more attractive and the target for thieves.

What about the people who lose their laptops in the street, school or at airports? Here in Europe, in the eight biggest airports, 4,000 laptops are lost per week according to an article published at LeFigaro.fr.  At just one airport alone – Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris -  750 laptops are lost every week!

My point? All of us are exposed to these kinds of problems – theft, loss, etc – and, at the end of the day, our information can be gone in an instant…and forever. So what can we do about it? Stay at home? Never go out with our laptops? Chain ourselves to them?

What you can do is backup your information regularly. I know that lots of people thinks that it is difficult or that they don’t have the time to set it up and that’s why I’m writing about one of our products, GoFlex Home, as it is really simple to install and use. Apart from supporting the external storage needs of every computer at home, streaming content (music, video) to computers or multimedia players and having remote access to your information, GoFlex Home allows you to backup your files in a very easy way. You just need to tell the system what is important for you and it will take care of it.

I have been lucky in not having my laptop stolen (yet) but that doesn’t mean that I don’t backup my information. My mum always says “You never know what you’ve got, until it’s lost” and she’s right;  that’s why I’m protecting my data by backing it up. That’s my insurance policy!
