The Past, Present and Future of Data Storage – Infographic

I stumbled on this graphic by our brothers in storage over at Mozy that talks about the history of storage and where things are looking to go over the next few years. It’s interesting when you’ve been around the block a few times to remember some of these storage devices, and equally exciting to see where things could be going.

What really stood out for me in this graphic was Cloud and SSD storage.  This article on Cloud Storage Trends validates that consumer use for cloud storage is on the rise and not likely to slow down over the next few years.

This other article on cloud storage states that while 64% of people think it’s risky, 45% still use it. (Although, I think the author forgot to carry the one when doing the math.)

Then there’s SSD’s. This handy article from Storage Review.com does a nice comparison between SSD’s & HDD’s so you can see line-by-line the benefits of each.  As with all emerging technologies, as prices decline, usage will likely rise given the benefits of an SSD over an HDD.

Storage isn’t going away and as we continue moving faster in this digital world, it’s going to become as essential as food and water. So be prepared and back it up.
