David Burks
I am the Director of Product Marketing for Consumer Electronics Storage in Seagate’s Consumer Solutions Division. I am responsible for marketing programs for storage products targeted to the Digital Video Recording, Gaming, Automotive and Video Surveillance markets, including developing strategies & programs to support sales initiatives in the distribution channel. My knowledge of the consumer storage and entertainment markets comes from over 15 years of developing products in the CDR, CDRW, DVD+RW, digital entertainment and digital camera product categories while at Hewlett Packard and Seagate. In my spare time, I love to fly-fish and ride bicycles (both road & mountain bikes), and spend time with family and friends. I am not an avid TV fan, but admit (to the dismay of my wife) of being a fan of Ultimate Fighting which I make sure is captured on my DVR. I live in Loveland Colorado with my wife and two teenage daughters.

Is Internet TV Mainstream?

How long now has speculation about the Internet killing off DVDs and video stores been out there? It seems like it’s been just around the corner for at least five or six years. Lately though we are starting to see some evidence that Internet video delivery is hitting main stream. Consider these data points:
NetFlix: (Netflix [...]

No USB Storage Support for iPad

I must admit to being an early skeptic on the potential success ofApple’s much anticipated tablet gadget, now known as the iPad. But I have to say after watching all the video on the Apple web site… it looks really, really cool! The notion that I could use this device as an e-book reader, a [...]

Seagate SSD & Options for desktop performance

Wow, SSD is a hot topic! It’s fast, it’s sleek and it definitely gets a lot of attention. With Seagate’s recent release our first SSD for enterprise storage applications (Pulsar), the chatter in the blogosphere was almost palpable. Well, at least it was for us geeky-dweebs in the storage industry.
But seriously, let’s face the facts [...]

Optimized HDD Performance on Xbox 360

While the predominant form of game distribution for the Xbox 360 and the PS3 is still the DVD, the improved performance opportunities of the hard drive are starting to get more attention.
Unlike the PC gaming space, console game delivery is still dominated by traditional brick & mortar retail. As a result, good old optical media is the [...]

NetFlix for PS3

Access to on-demand content just got a better if you own a PS3.  Sonyand Netflix just announced a deal to include Netflix streaming capability on the existing install base of PS3 consoles. Combining recent price cuts with Netflix functionality for free, it looks like Sony is taking off the gloves against Microsoft. While Xbox 360 [...]

It’s cool to work for “green” company!

Being “green” today is certainly chic and politically correct.  But when it comes down to the “nitty-gritty” detail of actually developing and implementing environmentally sustainable strategies, high tech companies have a lot to deal with! I’ve seen these challenges first hand over years, touring manufacturing facilities close up and experiencing the negative side effects of ill-designed industrial [...]

A new day dawns for the next generation in screaming fast PCs!  Today, Seagate announced the world’s first hard drive to support the new SATA 3.0 specification – which runs at a blazing fast 6 Gigabits per seconds.  The Barracuda XT, is a new addition to the family of Barracuda hard drives for desktop computing. HD Internet Video – Straight to your TV!

I’ve grown tired of all the talk about how video-over-the-top and internet video will threaten traditional TV service providers. Yes, YouTube is phenomenon and yes, Netflix, CinemaNow, Hulu and all the rest are interesting concepts on how people might consume produced video content on-demand over the internet.  But the rub on all of these products [...]

Speed bump ahead with SATA 6G!

Currently, SATA 6G provides faster bandwidth than the max through put of most hard drives, but coupled with bigger caches or even with solid state or combined solid state and rotating media drives, you can count on a steady progression of performance increases in the storage market over the next couple of years thanks to SATA 6G as an enabling technoloyg.

Shiny Futures with Chrome and Bing

Microsoft and Google seem to be trying to hit each other where it can hurt most.  While  Microsoft’s Bing search engine, or should I say “decision engine”, is actually taking share from Google , the search engine giant takes their own swing at Microsoft with the announcement to extend Chrome, from a mere browser to [...]
